Red River's one stop information page for the Canon iP6700d.

Summary

The Canon ip6700d is a great printer in terms of print quality, speed, reliability, and ease of use. We use ours primarily for note card printing because of its robust paper feed mechanism and brilliant dye based inks. Red River Paper recommends this printer for greeting card, portfolio, business, and proofing applications. Basically, if you need great looking photo quality and are not concerned about fade resistance, this is a good choice.

Print Quality

Overall, photos printed on the iP6700d are as good as a lab print given the right settings, and a good file. Color gamut is excellent with pleasing skin tones, and dark blacks. The ChromaLife 100 ink system in this printer is dye based which is a big plus if brilliant color is a must.

Photo detail is also good. At the best quality setting, tone is almost continuous. Dot structure is only evident if prints are viewed very closely. When used with Red River inkjet papers, the Canon produces photo quality prints that are hard to distinguish from a traditional photo lab.

Black & white printing is technically possible (in that the color ink is turned off). However, acheiving a neutral tone is pretty difficult. Do not consider this printer if the bulk of your prints are to be neutral black & white. (Buy an Epson R2400 for that) One way we have worked around the problem is to always add a little tone to our B&W prints. A little yellow or blue makes for pretty sepia and cool tones that the Canon has no problem reproducing.

Speed

The iP6700d is fast. The Canon print head has 3072 nozzles. At best photo quality, a 4x6 takes around 30 seconds. A full 8x10 prints in 1 minute 30 seconds. Of course, print speed can be effected by processor speed and file size, so these are general estimates.

Paper Feed

One of the main reasons Red River recommends Canon printers is consistent paper feed. Without a doubt, Canon printers are the most consistent and feeding all sorts of inkjet papers from thin to super card weights. Most Red River note card papers are between 10mil and 13mil thick so feed capability is important if you are trying to produce more than a few cards at a time.

Inks

Using the new ChromaLife 100 dye ink system, the iP6700d can reproduce brilliant color quality. With six individual ink tanks, colors can be changed independently when they run out. The clear tanks are a nice feature because you can be sure you are really out of ink!

Colors used are:

Cyan
Yellow
Magenta
Photo Magenta
Photo Cyan
Black

Cost of operating the Canon is reasonable and is in line with other desktop printers from Epson or HP. Ink tanks cost about $11.00 each, which yellow, photo cyan, cyan, and photo magenta changed most often.

Extra Features

The Canon offers stand alone printing with no computer needed. Slots for memory cards* are on the front of the printer. A high quality 3.5" LCD screen pops up to view your images on the card directly. From the on-printer controls, size, quality, and number of prints can be selected and executed.

Media Compatibility

All Red River inkjet papers work well with the Canon iP6700d. Each of our papers has been used with the printer to insure ink compatibility and feed consistency. We recommend any of the papers from our note card line for the iP6700d.

Printer Software Tour

Canon drivers are intuitive. All of the controls for regular use are on two tabs. Both the PC and Mac versions offer the same functionality. We would recommend two changes to Canon if possible: 1) Make interaction with ICC profiles easier and more straightfowrard and 2) Allow the user to save custom paper sizes. Beyond that, everything is fine.

Conclusions

The Canon iP6700d is a remarkable photo inkjet printer for the price. Speed, print quality, and paper feed make it our recommended buy for note card printing and fast everyday photo color needs.
