The Assignment
Shoot a "Character Study" session showcasing Thatcher’s versatility as an actor.

The Execution
“This image was shot in my Dover, Ohio studio and required a three-and-a-half hour makeup session by two make-up artists. A background rich in reds and oranges was chosen to contrast with the blue makeup. Two background lights were gelled with red for additional color depth. A 4x6-foot softbox was used as the main light and a 4x6-foot reflector was used for fill. About 175 images were taken with a 28-105mm f/2.8 lens on a Nikon D80.”
 
Post Production
“Post processing was done with Photoshop CS3. Level adjustment and curves layers were applied to intensify color saturation. Minor retouching was done to the body makeup.”
 
The Output
Proof prints were output on Red River's Arctic Polar Gloss at 8.5x 11-inches on an Epson Stylus Photo R260 printer. The Arctic Polar Gloss surface provided color richness and depth that made the Blue Devil appear to pop right off the paper. It was the perfect choice for this subject.
