The Assignment
Capture the excitement of places and people in ports on the west coast of Mexico. Use dramatic lighting to lift the images out of the ordinary.

The Execution
"While shooting some pictures at the beach in Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa, this little girl approached with some of her family to see what I was doing. I was struck by her naturalness and beauty. The lighting was perfect for the kind of picture I wanted to capture and when I raised my Canon 1D Mark II -with the zoom set to a focal length of 210mm- she responded by giving the kind of soulful eye contact that made this image one of the client's favorites."

Post Production
"The image was taken in RAW and processed in Photoshop. It was cropped to remove her mother and brother who were on either side of her. The rubber stamp tool was used to remove a foot of a person walking behind her on the beach. Then, after checking the histogram, the image was given a small saturation boost."

The Output
"Red River's Arctic Polar Satin paper was used for printing the image using my Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer. I switched to Red River papers a few years ago after evaluating the cost and quality of their papers. Arctic Polar Satin paper was chosen because I did not want a glossy finish, yet wanted the detail and sparkle of the girl's eyes to show. Her eyes are what made the photo special for me."
