The Client
Personal Project for the fine art and editorial market.
The Assignment
Capture the raw power, grace and beauty of a western horse roundup.
The Execution
“I shot from the ground at sunset and sunrise (no flash, just natural light) and moved fast (no tripod) to keep the wranglers and horses back and side-lighted which gave depth and drama to the clouds of dust. When chasing fast-moving images like this, it’s important that you pre-scout the area for hazards so you don’t get hurt. Try to anticipate where the action is moving and allow yourself space to move fast and get into a new position quickly. Finally, don’t try to compose in the viewfinder; the action is too fast and erratic. Just go wide, point and shoot! This image was taken using a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 Image Stabilized "L" lens mounted on a full-frame Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II. Exposure was 1/320 sec at f/8 in Aperture Priority Mode.”
Post Production
“At the time this series was shot, my RAW file conversions were processed with Capture One but currently I use Adobe Lightroom for RAW file processing, B&W conversions and noise reduction. I also use Photoshop for cropping, sharpening, toning and for upping the resolution when clients require larger sized prints.”
The Output
“I’ve been outputting digital prints for more than a decade, using both Canon and Epson large format pigment printers in my studio. My studio shelves contain more Red River papers than any other brand because they offer an unmatched value for my clients in terms of quality and cost. My favorite photo surface is Red River Ultra Pro Satin and it’s become a studio standard. I’ve been a Red River customer for many years, not just for their wide range of quality papers, but also for their excellent customer support.”
