Inkjet paper can be single-sided or double-sided. On single-sided media, only one surface has the ink-receptive coating for photo-quality output — the reverse side is plain base stock. With matte and cotton fine art papers, the difference can be subtle. Here are a few quick methods to confirm the coated, printable side:
1) Check the box orientation
In most cases, inkjet paper ships print side up. If you still have the packaging, compare a sheet from the box with your loose sheets — you can often identify the orientation with a quick visual match.
2) Inspect under strong light
Tilt the sheet under bright light.
The coated side usually appears more uniform and consistent.
The back side may look slightly more porous, uneven, or reveal more visible fiber texture.

3) The “tactile” test
Lightly touch a corner with a damp fingertip.
Your finger tends to stick slightly to the coated side.
4) Highlighter confirmation
Make a tiny mark on each side with a highlighter.
The brighter, sharper mark is typically the coated surface.
