Macro photography is about photographing objects that are very close to your lens, film or the sensor. Using the classic definition, in macro photography the image shown on the film plane (or sensor) is nearly as big as the object photographed. There are different ways to achieve this. The most common one is to use a specialized macro lens. Such lenses are good at focusing sharply on a small area approaching the size of the film frame.
Since you are so close to your subject, reproducing the image in sharp detail makes sense. You can get the best results by choosing a paper with a smooth surface. A glossy, metallic, or matte inkjet paper will do the trick. Keep in mind that a glossy and photo metallic papers will appear sharper and more vibrant because of their high reflectivity. However, the reflections can also hamper your ability to absorb all of the details if you are under bright light. A matte inkjet paper allows all of the detail to show through without reflective distraction. Along with that benefit, matte papers do not reproduce the same saturation and punch you'll see on a glossy. Choose the surface you like best given the costs and benefits listed above.
