Pigment vs. Dye Inks

Pigment inks are designed to produce long lasting prints (50-70+ years) in various display conditions. Printers that use pigment ink tend to be "professional" models and cost more than dye ink models. You should consider pigment ink if you are going to display your work for long periods without glass or acrylic protection.

Most inkjet printers use dye based ink. This type of ink offers the best color performance and paper compatibility. The downside is that dye inks are not as fade resistant as pigment. Current model dye ink systems from Canon (ChromaLife) and Epson (Claria) are good to perhaps 40 years on display and around 100 years in dark storage. The number is closely tied to how you care for the print and store or display it.

Ink Summary - Use pigment inks when you want to be assured of archival prints in many different environments. If you do not require extreme fade resistance (minimum 70 years) outside an album then dye ink printers can be on your shopping list.

Paper Feed Path

Epson and Canon printers have rear feed trays. HP printers generally feed from the front only. We like Epson and Canon because those top trays can more easily accept heavy card stock.
