The Epson SureColor P400 is the direct replacement for the Stylus R2000. Both printers use an eight color pigment based ink system. The R2000 features the UltraChrome HG ink set while the P400 uses UltraChrome HG2 inks. The printers have identical features and printer driver controls. The performance of the P400 vs. the R2000 is virtually identical. This is a good thing as the R2000 was one of the better photo printers Epson produced. p>

Both printers use eight, 14 mL capacity ink cartridges:

  • Cyan
  • Magenta
  • Yellow
  • Photo Black
  • Matte Black
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Gloss Optimizer

The use of red and orange as "spiker colors" provides punchy color and good skin tone reproduction. The Epson UltraChrome pigment ink system is designed to resist fade for long periods of time - usually well in excess of what the traditional photo lab can offer. Both printers feature two black inks - photo black and matte black. Photo black ink is optimized for use with glossy, satin, luster, and photo metallic papers. Matte Black is used with all non-reflective papers such as matte and cotton fine art. The P400 and R2000 switch between black inks based on the driver media setting. Unlike the Epson R3000 and P600, the black swap is instant and uses no ink with either the P400 or R2000.

Peformance Differences

To the unaided eye, prints from the SureColor P400 and the Stylus R2000 will likely be identical. Using printer profile data, subtle differences in how each printer works can be seen.

UltraPro Satin 4.0 Gamut Comparison

In this instance, the P400 gamut sits just inside the R2000's. For much of the plot, the P400 matches the R2000 - where the solid area touches the outline.

In a 3D plot of the gamut, we see some places where the R2000 gamut is larger and others where the P400 will outperform.

Polar Matte Gamut Comparison

This gamut plot is a bit different, using solid lines for both papers. As you can see the printers match up for most of the gamut. Only in orange-yellow do we see the P400 dip down compared to the R2000. Again, in the real world the average person could not tell prints from each printer apart.

Conclusion

The Epson SureColor P400 is a worthy replacement for the R2000. Both printers excel at bold, saturated photo reproduction. Because of the gloss optimizer, they work particularily well with glossy, satin, luster, and photo metallic papers. If you need to replace your R2000, the P400 is the obvious choice. If you have an R2000 and have the itch to "upgrade", the P400 is not going to change much for you. If you need a great photo printer for long term fade resistant prints, consider the P400 as a strong contender. Also be sure to check out the available 13" Wide Inkjet Printers.
